SARFC U14s vs Hertford U14s A
A resolute performance with a fighting finish – Sarries show heart in season opener
Saracens U14s opened their season with a spirited performance against Hertford, narrowly losing 7-17 in a match that was much closer than the final scoreline suggests.
Sarries struck first, with Sapir powering over the line to score a well-worked try, which Josh successfully converted to give them an early 7-0 lead. However, Hertford responded with two tries of their own, though they failed to convert either, leaving Sarries just behind at 7-10.
Sarries were at their most dangerous when they moved the ball wide, with Sapir and Julian leading several exciting breakaways. Unfortunately, a lack of support at crucial moments meant these opportunities didn’t turn into more points. Despite this, the backs showed real potential, and it’s clear Sarries have the firepower to cause problems for future opponents.
Defensively, the team’s focus on tackling was evident. Hertford struggled to break through, as the boys tackled with confidence and tenacity. The scrum was solid, giving a strong platform to work from, and the team handled kicks well. However, the breakdown proved challenging, with the forwards sometimes slow to arrive at the ruck, giving Hertford an edge.
As fatigue set in, the team shifted away from their game plan, with fewer attempts to get the ball wide. In the closing stages, Hertford scored a decisive third try, this time adding the conversion to stretch their lead to 7-17, which sealed the win.
There’s plenty to be optimistic about. With more intensity at the breakdown and better support play, Sarries will be a real threat. As they prepare for their next tough test against Finchley to kick off this year’s league campaign, the team is in a great position to build on this performance.
